The issue of roll carts came back up in front of the Columbia City Council last night, and will be in front of voters next year. The council discussed an initiative petition to ban roll carts as the city’s way to collect garbage, and unanimously voted to put the issue in front of voters during the presidential primary on March 15, 2016.
Second Ward council member Michael Trapp says even though a large number of citizens have voiced concerns against roll carts, that might not necessarily be the majority opinion.
"Let's at least put an end to the question of 'Is Columbia universally against roll carts?' I don't believe so," he said.
The initiative, which will appear on the ballot as is, was created by the Solid Waste Advocacy Group or SWAG. It prohibits the city buying or requiring residents to buy roll carts, as well as banning the city from buying vehicles for roll cart pick up.
