Hearnes Center Flooding to Cost $100,000 in Damages

University of Missouri is still cleaning up the Hearnes Center after a water main failure flooded the floor.

The water main broke on the west side of the building early Saturday morning.

The gym floor was covered in water.

Campus operations worked with a contractor to clean it up.

“They’ve been able to clean up and get most of the- all of the water- out of the building,” University of Missouri spokesperson Christian Basi said. “But, we are still assessing the damage and making sure we don’t have any other pockets of places where water may have gotten into.”

The university believes the water main break was not caused by a person but was a mechanical failure.

“We don’t have an accurate estimate yet. Preliminary estimates puts damage in excess of $100,000, but we still have a lot of work to do to determine what the actual cost will be,”Basi said.

Mizzou’s volleyball team practices in Hearnes.

“We do know the wooden floor in the arena is permanently damaged and will have to be replaced. That’s not something that can be probably replaced overnight,” University of Missouri’s Athletic Department’s Deputy Athletics Director Nike Joos said. “There’s a tartan floor, which is the original floor to the building that’s underneath there, and we’ll have to see if there’s any damage to it from the water. There’s a lot to investigate and check out here.”

The Athletic Department is using a floor called sport court to cover the indoor track area for the volleyball team to continue to practice on.

“We will have to analyze what we do for competition based on what we see as we continue to assess the damage,” Joos said.

The team is away this weekend, but will play at home next weekend.
