This year marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. And any other year, communities would likely be observing it by hosting things like trash pickups and environmental celebrations. But things are different this year because of the coronavirus. So, the City of Springfield’s Environmental Services has come up with a way that people can still celebrate the event that began on April 22, 1970.
It’s issued a 12 Days of Earth Day virtual challenge. According to the City of Springfield, there will be a variety of offerings online via social media and on the city’s website.
There will be daily challenges such as creating nature art in your yard and picking up litter in your neighborhood. They’ll be posted Sunday, April 19 through Thursday, April 30. Participants can track their points and post to social media using #SGFEarthDay.
Virtual Earth Day offerings on April 22 will include classes, demonstrations, tree plantings, stream tours and more.
