Those who want to take Missouri’s high school equivalency exam or HiSET for the first time now have easier access to it.

The cost to take the exam is $98.75. That price  includes exams in math, science, social studies, reading and writing and a $10 state registration fee.  But Missouri legislators passed a bill last session, which allows first-time test takers to take the HiSET at no cost.

Ozarks Technical Community College offers free help preparing adults to take the exam through its Adult Education and Literacy Program. The classes provide individualized learning opportunities for adults who want to prepare for the HiSET, learn English as a second language or improve their reading, math and writing skills, according to OTC.  To be considered for the AEL program, participants must be at least 17 years old and not enrolled in high school.  Classes are held at several locationsin southwest Missouri.

Last year, OTC helped 166 students earn their High School Equivalency credential, according to the school.  And, graduates of the AEL program are eligible to take one of the college’s three-credit-hour classes for free.
