This year’s Academy Awards has struggled to find a host. But a late night talk show host in the Ozarks says he knows someone—“Ahem!”—who would host The Oscars for pennies on the dollar.
The late night talk show, which started at Skinny Improv in 2006, now airs on ABC and FOX affiliate stations. It’s filmed live in front of a public audience in Springfield.
Houghton says the show has expanded and now airs in 10 broadcast markets in more than five different states.
The Mystery Hour hosts its first live filming of 2019 at the Historic Gillioz Theatre on Saturday, January 19 at 7:00 pm.
The first show this year will feature actor Sam Levine from Freaks and Geeks and Inglorious Basterds, Diskey – a frisbee catching dog -- and three different musical acts. It will also feature MSU professor David Romano, a world-renowned expert on the Kurdish people.
Houghton says sometimes people on the East and West coasts are skeptical of The Mystery Hour.
“It’s a bit of a weird sell when you tell a friend in Los Angeles: yeah, there’s a late night talk show in Missouri, not Saint Louis or Kansas City, and you’d actually like going there and it’s worth your time.”
Houghton hopes to eventually have his show broadcast nationally.
