Council Approves Raises for City Workers as Part of 2019 Budget

Meiying Wu/KBIA

City workers will receive pay increases for the 2019 fiscal year after the council approved the budget Monday night.

The pay increases include:

  • Raising the minimum pay for all permanent positions to $15 an hour.
  • Moving eligible employees to the midpoint of their pay scales.
  • Increasing pay grade maximums.
  • Giving all permanent city employees a 45-cent raise.
  • Giving trash collectors an additional $2 an hour.

According to a presentation from City Manager Mike Matthes, 229 city employees are eligible for the move to midpoint and 237 employees will be impacted by the minimum wage increase.

The 45-cent raise for permanent city employees would be applied after the minimum wage increases and moves to midpoint. Any raises could not exceed the revised pay-grade maximums.

The pay-grade maximum increase and 45-cent raise is meant to reduce the impact of losing the $1,000 bonus employees received in the 2018 fiscal year, according to an budget amendment sheet.
