But after CBS correspondent Lara Logan and other journalists publicly described being sexually assaulted on assignment -- and kept on reporting about the conflicts that made them targets -- the silence was broken and others began speaking out.
The Committee to Protect Journalists has maintained the momentum by publishing two reports on sexual violence and promoting the benefits of training staffs to deal with the risk.
Global Journalist host David Reed spoke to Lauren Wolfe, who's the author of those two CPJ reports. She's currently the Director of the Women Under Siege Project. They were joined by Soraya Saharddi Nelson, an NPR foreign correspondent based in Cairo.
