Jefferson City City Council passes resolution to explore turning animal shelter into museum

The City Council passed a resolution Monday to explore the possibility of using the building to display exhibits for a firefighter museum. The building is adjacent to Fire Station Number 2, which would be restored for display as well. The Fire Station was built in 1935.  City Administrator Nathan Nikolaus says the addition of a museum could boost tourism in the area.

“I don’t think there are going to be a lot of people who will drive to Jeff City just to see the firefighter’s museum. But I think that a lot of people who are already here, say to take the MSP tour, will drive the couple extra blocks to visit the firefighter’s museum. So it’s kind of an as long as you’re here kind of thing. It would keep people here longer,” Nikolaus said.

The resolution says the cost of exploring this option will come from private donations. Nikolaus says community members have already shown an interest in donating money as well as items for exhibits.
