The University of Missouri Press was nearly shut down last year, before being moved to the Columbia campus. Yesterday, a committee charged with analyzing that string of decisions released its report at an MU Faculty Council meeting.
Describing the decision-making process as “clumsy and opaque,” the report called on university administration and faculty to reach agreement on what should be expected from “faculty consultation,” and when it should be sought.
Council member Harry Tyrer says the report shows communication with faculty is necessary for the UM Press to run smoothly.
“It seems clear that issues such as this require discussions with faculty, and not just any faculty but recognized bodies of representatives of faculty such as Faculty Council, the Graduate Faculty Senate, inner campus faculty council, and so on.”
Art Jago, professor of management at the Trulaske College of Business and head of the committee in charge of the report, says he thinks similar conflict could be avoided going forward.
