A lunchtime rally brought about 50 people to U.S. Senator Roy Blunt’s Columbia, Missouri office Friday, voicing their support for the Affordable Care Act to his local staff. The demonstrators called for the health care law to be fixed rather than repealed completely.
Scott Fines was one of several people who shared their personal experiences with Obamacare. His two-year-old son, Ryan, was born with esophageal atresia, a congenital birth defect.
Fines told the crowd the condition lead to $750,000 being charged to Ryan's insurance in the first 5 months of his life, and about $30,000 charged to his insurance per year after that.
“If you repeal the ACA, he will not get insurance again,” he told the crowd.
A similar demonstration was held outside U.S. Representative Vicky Hartzler’s Columbia office early Friday morning. About 203,000 Missourians gained health coverage under the Affordable Care Act, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Both Hartzler and Blunt campaigned against the law during their successful re-election bids last November.
