Fourth threat in two weeks leads to Ashland student in police custody

For the fourth time in less than two weeks, a student in Ashland has been detained for making a threat related to Southern Boone Middle School.

The incident happened Wednesday morning at around 10:30 a.m. when the school district reported the threat to Boone County Joint Communications. The student who reportedly made the threat was taken into custody on suspicion of making a terrorist threat.

In a social media post, Ashland police said there's no evidence the actions in this incident were planned ahead of time, adding the student had no weapons with them.

Before Wednesday's incident, threats about the middle school had been reported on Sept. 13, 16 and 20. The first two incidents prompted an early dismissal and cancellation of classes. The third incident involved an Instagram account that was reportedly harassing and targeting specific students.

In its first board meeting since the first threat was reported on Sept. 13, the Southern Boone Board of Education discussed safety measures the district has employed in the past, as well as future plans. Board member Jeremy Galloway acknowledged concerns parents have shared in the last few weeks.

Ashland Police Department have asked families to speak with their children about the importance of reporting threats and harassment to adults.
