Seg. 1: D.C. Based Journalists | Seg. 2: NPR's Shankar Vedantam

Segment 1: Three journalists based in Washington speak to the unique challenges of covering national politics up close.

Each day brings something exciting and newsworthy in Washington, D.C., whether it's an impeachment inquiry or a new health care policy. Three journalists spoke about navigating the political web of the Capitol, the "glorified stalking" of politicians for quotes, and the sheer enormity of working in the nation's hub for political decision-making.

Segment 2, beginning at 27:00: NPR social science correspondent says our subconscious controls more than we may realize.

Shankar Vedantam shared how he transitioned to radio after a decade of working for the Washington Post. His interest in the social sciences shines through in his award-winning podcast, Hidden Brain, which focuses on how human behavior touches on everything in our lives, even though we're not always consciously aware of it.
