The world is coming off of a weekend of protests, rallies and gatherings calling for justice after the killing of George Floyd. They're also calling for attention to police violence against unarmed black citizens and continuing to call for action.
Indeed, more than a thousand people gathered in Columbia Sunday at the Boone County Courthouse for a Black Lives Matter rally and march that included speeches, singing and music.
In this episode, we take some time to step back to talk about protests -- the voices, the energy and the music that can keep the momentum going during these times that last week, "Race Matters, Friends" President Traci Wilson-Kleekamp called "painful hope.”

Professor Stephanie Shonekan, a musicologist and the professor and chair of Afro-American Studies at University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Professor Shonekan has also served as a faculty member in MU’s Black Studies Department and School of Music. Her latest book is called "Black Lives Matter & Music" and she’s also launched a collaboration called Race and The American Story.
