Autopsy scheduled in homicide near Lake of the Woods

An autopsy was scheduled for Monday morning in the death of 26-year-old Ahmonta Harris, who was fatally shot Saturday night in the 5700 block of Limoges Drive near the Lake of the Woods golf course.

Boone County Sheriff's Detective Tom O'Sullivan said more information will be released once the autopsy is completed.

Harris was one of the organizers of what was informally called Columbia's fireworks wars around July 4, according to past Missourian reporting

Harris attended community meetings that addressed social, economic and racial disparities in the northern neighborhood.

"It takes action to get things done," he was quoted as saying in a January 2017 article about community members working toward positive change.

He was involved with the plans to create a community center in the city's north neighborhood, referring to himself as a community leader who knew the area, he said in a February 2017 article.

In 2012, Harris served as a panel member at a Silence the Violence forum where he shared his experience with violence in Columbia. Harris aimed to be a role model for the city's youth, he said in an article about residents coming together to promote awareness of crime in the city.

In 2016, Harris participated in a community meeting discussing social equity where he shared that he had been shot, stabbed and hit with a crowbar, according to past Missourian reporting.
