Bitter Cold Closes Campuses, Strains Homeless Shelters

KBIA

Schools across Missouri called off classes today and homeless shelters are overflowing as temperatures plunged to dangerous lows.

And the National Weather Service this afternoon issued a Winter Weather Advisory until midnight tonight for parts of central Missouri, including Columbia and Fulton, warning of slippery road conditions during the evening commute. Columbia Public Schools announced a two-hour delayed start Thursday, Jan. 31.

Schools from St. Louis to Kansas City canceled classes today, along with the University of Missouri, Truman State University, and Missouri State University.

Brian Vogeler of Jefferson City’s Salvation Army says its emergency shelter has seen a significant jump this month.

Vogeler says the shelter has never run out of cots and isn’t turning anyone away.

But he is concerned that some may not have transportation to shelters.

“I know there are people out there who don’t have the means to get to shelters, unfortunately. But like I said too we just don’t have any transportation to go out and get people.”

KMBC-TV reports that the Kansas City Rescue Mission has been full for weeks. But yesterday, with wind chills headed to arctic levels across the region, no one was being turned away.

Trash collectors also suspended operations today in several communities, including Columbia.

This story has been updated to include the latest Winter Weather Advisory and delayed CPS start time.
