More than 70 percent of registered voters in Boone County hit the polls Tuesday, the highest local turnout for a midterm election in the past 30 years.
Boone County Clerk Taylor Burks tweeted that around 75,600 voters cast ballots, either in-person or absentee. There are currently 107,600 registered voters in Boone County.
Burks also said the numbers are unofficial until verified by a bipartisan board.
The numbers are the highest Boone County has seen in recent midterm election years. Voter turnout was 43.6 percent in 2014, and 54.9 percent in 2010, according to the Boone County Clerk’s website.
Before the polls closed, Burks tweeted that the highest midterm turnout in the last 30 years was 66 percent in 2006.
Tuesday’s numbers are still lower than turnout rates in recent presidential elections. Boone County’s turnout rate was 78.3 percent in 2016; 79.3 percent in 2012; and 83.7 percent in 2008.
Earlier in the night, Burks predicted that voter turnout would be close to 77 percent, but later revised his predictions to near 70.
