Cole and Boone County Clerks are hoping to see more voters participating in today’s elections.

Cole County Clerk Marvin Register said this morning he is optimistic about voter turnout in today’s municipal elections. Voters across Jefferson City will elect school board members, and vote on whether to raise taxes to build new school facilities. Register says he saw a steady flow of people going into the polls.

“I think we’re going to have a good turnout,” Register said. “People are going to the polls, and they are very consistent about going. So I look for us to have a decent turnout.”

Columbia voters might turn out in lower numbers in this Election Day. Boone County Clerk Wendy Noren said the county saw fewer people going to the polls this morning, although some polling places in the Third and Fourth Ward were busy. Noren said not having a school board race this election might be one reason for lower turnout.

“Generally in April, we get a lot of people who turnout for school issues,” Noren said. “Columbia school district is about 60 percent of our county. That tends to make for a lower turnout.”

Register said it is especially hard to predict this year’s election results since candidates have ran quiet campaigns.

“We are just going to wait and see what happens,” he said.

He expects early voting results to come out by 8 this evening. According to Noren, polling stations are running smoothly without any major issues.
