Columbia Water Bills Subject of Tuesday Council Hearing

A proposal to increase water rates for Columbia residents — and especially for those who use a lot of water in the summer — will return to the Columbia City Council on Tuesday.

The council is scheduled to hold a public hearing and vote on the proposed rate increases at its regular meeting, which will be held Tuesday rather than Monday because of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The proposed changes would restructure the city's billing system for water use in the summer, or the months of June through September. Water rates for residential customers in the summer would be billed on a three-tier system, according to a council memo.

The first tier would charge $2.86 per 100 cubic feet of water used each month. The second tier would charge $4.01, and the third tier would charge $6.02, according to the memo. The non-summer rate would also increase to $2.86 from the current rateof $2.79.
