More Police Officers to Be Stationed Downtown

Meiying Wu

Supplying more officers downtown is one way the Columbia Police Department is trying to deal with shootings and other crime in the area.

“We’re using overtime funding to make sure there’s a visible presence downtown,” Ken Burton, Columbia Police Department chief, said at a press conference Wednesday.

Officers will be drafted from a list of those who haven’t worked as much overtime as other officers, Burton said.

“It’s something we have to do,” he said. “It’s not something we want to do.”
