Youth Advisory Council Learns What Can Be Done for City’s Climate Action Plan

Columbia’s Youth Advisory Council met Tuesday night to learn more about the city’s Climate Action and Adaption Plan.

The council decided one of its goals is to be environmentally friendly, so Eric Hempel, an Energy Educator in the city’s Office of Sustainability, explained to the group what actions they can take as a council and as part of the Columbia Community.<--break->Some ideas discussed included waste and light audits in the Columbia Public Schools and members of the youth council using their schools to spread awareness of the climate plan in the city.

The City of Columbia has already hosted one community forum to learn which goals are most important to residents. Hempel said now that they have made a strategic plan for reasonable and reachable goals, there will be another forum on November 28 to hear how community members want their tax money spent.

“The 28 is an opportunity to give input on where they think city funds - their money essentially - should be prioritized for a number of actions we are evaluating to try and reduce our emissions,” Hempel said.

The Climate Action and Adaption Plan’s goal is to reduce community carbon emissions by 35 percent by 2035.
