Prison Reform

Twenty-five years ago, the New York State prison at Attica erupted in a bloody riot that left forty-three people dead. The incident led to a number of important prison reforms that improved conditions for inmates, and gave them greater access to the courts. Now, the popularity of tough-on-crime measures has contributed to longer sentences and tougher conditions in most prisons. Sandy Tolan reports.
