Since the Bakers donated land for an observatory to MSU, the Department of Physics, Astronomy and Materials Science has used it to serve students and the general population. After several decades, the equipment was showing its age and it was time for some new polish. Through the actions of MSU's astronomy faculty, the dean of CNAS and the provost, a new telescope was acquired and the facilities were renovated.
