Round Table Discussion To Encourage Women To Serve In Local Government

The Southwest Missouri chapter of the National Organization for Women, or NOW, is hosting a round table discussion on September 25th. The educational event will have candidates for local, county, and state public office talking about their experiences campaigning.

"One of the first things that we wanted to do was really talk about running for local office, especially as a grassroots candidate, because there's been such a lack of participation and too few names on the ballot," said Jaye Owens, chair of the Southwest Missouri chapter of NOW.

Owens said the last Springfield City Council election had six seats up for grabs, but only two of them had more than one candidate running.

According to Southwest Missouri NOW’s online newsletter, those attending the round table can expect to learn practical skills for becoming a first-time candidate or being a member of a campaign team.

The round table discussion will take place Wednesday, September 25th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Schweitzer Brentwood Library. That’s located at 2214 South Brentwood Boulevard in Springfield.
