Missouri State University held a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday April 8 for its new performing arts amphitheater. The theater and arts park will be home to Tent Theatre and other local productionsThe project is expected to cost around $6.4 million and be finished in the spring 2022 semester. The new amphitheater will be located next to Craig Hall, which is home to the theatre and dance department. According to university officials, the new theater will have a permanent stage and tiers for up to 350 moveable seats.
Dean of Reynolds College of Arts and Letters Dr. Shawn Wahl said at the ceremony the investment in the amphitheater will help strengthen the college and make Missouri State more attractive to students who want to pursue theatre.
“This groundbreaking serves as a turning point for the university," Wahl said. "This arts park and amphitheater will serve all of our students and the community.”
Clif Smart revealed the amphitheater’s new name at the ceremony as the John Goodman Amphitheater in honor of actor and MSU alumnus John Goodman.
