The University of Missouri’s Museum of Art and Archaeology will close on September 30th and start its move to the former Ellis Fischel Cancer Center. That facility is now being called Mizzou North.
The museum wasn't scheduled to close this early, but the change was made to accommodate moving the museum's collection. “The art movers felt they needed more time in order to safely move the collection by the end of the calendar year," Museum Director Alex Barker said. "So we had to move up the date in which the galleries close just to make sure that the move of collections could take place the way it needs to.”
The relocation of the museum is a part of the “Renew Mizzou” campaign, which will include renovations to Pickard, Swallow and Jesse Halls. MU Campus Facilities spokesperson Karlan Seville said, “The University is updating facilities as we have funding available to make the facilities more useable for today.” The renovation project will not affect the outside of the buildings but will focus on improvements to the interior.
According to the University’s original plans, other faculty and staff will begin moving from their respective buildings starting in March. Construction will start in June 2014 and all faculty and staff should be able to move back into their buildings in the summer of 2015.
