Thinking Out Loud: Going Native at Powell Gardens

Trevor Harris / KBIA

Converting lawn grasses and turf into native plantings that attract pollinators and desirable wildlife is a process. An upcoming workshop at Powell Gardens is for landowners seeking to convert turf grass.

Alan Branhagan recommends the following books as good introductions to building a native landscape on your property.

-The American Woodland Garden, Capturing the Spirit of the Deciduous Forest by Rick Darke from Timber Press.

-Gardening with Prairie Plants, How to Create Beautiful Native Landscapes by Sally and Andy Wasowski from University of Minnesota Press.

-Bringing Nature Home, How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in our Gardens by Douglas Tallamy from Timber Press.

-Alan Branhagan's book - Native Plants of the Midwest -  is available this November.

More information about the upcoming Missouri Prairie Foundation workshop is online.

This program was originally broadcast on August 2, 2016.

Listen for new episodes of Thinking Out Loud each Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. on KBIA 91.3FM.
