City of Columbia implements new parking meters

The city of Columbia is trying out a new type of parking meter that gives drivers more options for how to pay.

There are forty new downtown parking meters on ninth street in Columbia. The solar powered meters still take coins but also accept credit cards and a cell phone app. This is phase two of a test period for new parking meters.

MU student Mikkel Christiansen hopes  they will help him avoid parking tickets from the city of Columbia.

“I think it’s neat, you don’t have to worry about having change all of the time. Now you can just bring either your credit card or even your cell phone. So that’s a big plus,” Christiansen said.

The city hopes the new meters will increase meter revenue and decrease the amount of tickets issued downtown.
