Cerner says thousands of new employees could be housed on new KCMO campus site

Cerner, one of the largest employers in Kansas City, announced Thursday afternoon it intends to purchase about 237 acres at the site of the former Bannister Mall, which it hopes to use to build a new campus to house thousands of new employees.

Cerner says the site will expand its existing Innovation Campus, which houses 2,866 employees. Cerner is health care information technology company that specializes in digital medical records systems. It employs 8,794 people in the Kansas City metropolitan area. According to the release, the “expanded campus, if constructed, would potentially house 12,000-15,000 additional associates upon full build-out, which would be based on Cerner’s growth and occur over an extended period.”

Governor Jay Nixon issued a press release Thursday as well, touting the plan. The Kansas City Star published a thorough breakdown of the details of the process and the site before the official announcement. The Star reports a company set up by Cerner’s co-founders was approved for $10.7 million in state tax credits by the Missouri Development Finance Board today.
