Possibility for 125 Jobs Evaporates as Roofing Company Drops Plans for Moberly Plant

National roofing manufacturer GAF announced Thursday it will not go through with plans to build a new plant in Moberly.

The company announced in a press release that its decision is the result of downward market trends and increased operating costs.

This news comes after Governor Jay Nixon first announced the company's plans to build the facility in March of last year.

GAF planned on investing $149 Million into the plant, which the Governor said would create roughly 125 new Jobs.

David Gaines, Vice President of the Moberly Economic Development Corporation, said that the decision is unfortunate, but he believes the area is appealing to businesses and factories.

“It was very disappointing news that they chose not to make that investment in the community,” he said. “We still firmly believe that Missouri as a whole and central Missouri specifically continues to be a very favorable place on a global basis to do business from.”

Gaines also spoke about the specific site GAF planned to build on, and explained how it will continue to be attractive to future business ventures.

“The site that was proposed for their location is a Missouri certified site, which means it has AT&T cyber park status and is an Ameren Electric preferred site” Gaines explained. “We think it continues to be an asset to the community for future business opportunities.”

Gaines says Currently, there are no new plans to develop the site GAF was to occupy.
