House Budget Committee approves plan to reverse cuts to higher education

The House Budget Committee approved a plan Wednesday to reverse Governor Nixon’s proposed cuts to the Higher Education Budget.

The committee approved a 24 billion dollar budget that replaces 40 million dollars the governor wants to cut.  Deputy Commissioner at the Department of Higher Education, Paul Wagner says the proposed plan will help schools.

“The schools have been cut over the last couple of years and, you know, we were fearful that this decline would continue. So when you’re talking about…it’s not really money being replaced, it’s simply a maintenance of the money the schools got the previous year,” Wagner said.

If the budget is approved, a portion of the funding will be coming from Supplemental Aid to the Blind.
