MU to add new alert systems

The University of Missouri is adding new ways to send out alerts in case of emergencies.

One new method is a beacon system that will help relay messages across campus. The other is a software program that can override computer screens to send an alert.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reports the university switched to a new alert notification system provider, BlackBoard Connect, this summer.

University spokesman Christian Basi says about 225 beacons are being installed across campus. They use strobes and sounds to get people's attention and then alert messages are displayed on a screen.

IT Director Terry Robb said the university is installing a program that lets administrators take over computer screens to display alert messages to faculty and staff. It's also working on a free download for students.
