Kansas City audiences won’t be in “the room where it happens” again until 2023.
The Broadway production of "Hamilton," scheduled to stop in Kansas City in late September for a two-week run at the Music Hall, has been postponed to March 21 – April 2, 2023.
Leslie Broecker of Broadway Across America announced Tuesday that she’s “disappointed” about having to reschedule the national touring production.
Based on Ron Chernow’s biography of founding father Alexander Hamilton, with book, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the musical blends hip-hop, jazz, rap, R&B, and Broadway. It has played to sellout crowds and rave reviews since opening in New York City in 2015. A touring production brought the musical to Kansas City in the summer of 2019.
Eight other touring productions remain scheduled for Kansas City, beginning in November. But Broecker said the complexity of a large production such as Hamilton required changes.
“In order to accommodate the continued impact of COVID-19 on the touring Broadway industry it is necessary to move our Hamilton dates,” she said in a news release.
The Broadway in Kansas City series is now scheduled to open with "Tootsie," a musical about an actor, Michael Dorsey, who struggles to find work until he disguises himself as a woman.
The 1982 movie featured Dustin Hoffman in the starring role. Rolling Stone described the musical as “musical comedy heaven.”
“It’s a wonderful musical that our audiences will love,” Broecker said, “and we can’t wait to welcome everyone back to the theatre.”
The American Theatre Guild, a not-for-profit touring Broadway presenter, works with Broadway Across America and supports the Broadway seasons in 12 markets, including Kansas City.

- "Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of the Temptations," June 21–26, 2022 – Music Hall
