The effort to legalize marijuana in the state of Missouri is getting a celebrity boost.

TV personality Montel Williams was in Jefferson City Monday to testify in support of House Bill 800, also known as the Compassionate Care Act.

That act would allow the use of medicinal marijuana for people with certain illnesses.

Williams suffers from multiple sclerosis, one of the medical conditions covered by the bill, and has advocated for medical marijuana laws in other states.

Under the act, patients with those illnesses would be allowed to buy two and a half ounces of marijuana for use over a period of two weeks, with a doctor’s note.

The bill would also require growers and distributors of medical marijuana within the state to obtain licenses.  It would require growers and distributors of medical marijuana to be licensed and follow certain security procedures.
