Columbia Living Costs Lower Than U.S. Average

Living costs in Columbia were 9.4% lower than the national average for the first quarter of 2019, according to a Tuesday release from the Columbia Chamber of Commerce.

This means that an item that costs $100 in the average U.S. city would only cost $90.60 in Columbia.

The chamber cited quarterly data from the Council for Community and Economic Research.

“This is a national program that’s done a national survey,” Chamber of Commerce President Matt McCormick said. “So, what they do is work with chambers and other organizations across the nation to put this together.”

Cost of living is determined by averaging the costs of grocery items, housing, utilities, transportation, health care and other miscellaneous goods and services.
