We at KBIA have found strength in our community during the COVID crisis. In our series, “Where You’re At,” we’re talking to our family and friends to see how their coping during the pandemic.

Here is Chris Mitchell’s call with MU student Justin Bohannan:

How are you doing? How have you been adjusting to the quarantine, the pandemic, COVID-19 all that jazz?

It’s been an interesting adjustment, I would say. Generally speaking, I think I'm doing well compared to a lot of people, you know, especially like some of the frontline workers that are having to deal with this a lot more seriously than I am. But yeah, so I think I'm doing all right, for the most part.

So how has the pandemic sort of affected your status is like a student, a worker, stuff like that? How has that sort of impacted your life in those aspects?

Right. It's been kind of tough. I lost basically my only form of income. I'm glad that, you know, the stimulus came through and some of the other unemployment benefits came through as well. But there for a little bit, I was like pretty terrified (about) just what exactly was going to happen with my financial situation. But regarding school, I think probably similar to most, the transition to online classes has been pretty strange. I don't know if I would say difficult, but it has been strange to essentially feel like you're kind of teaching yourself most of the material, you know, versus having like, a pretty active discussion in class or just feeling more present or engaged in class as well. So that's been kind of difficult, but I feel like I did the best with what I had.

What's been the hardest part of adjusting to these new quarantine rules, what's been the toughest for you?

I think the most difficult part has been, I'm trying to manage my time effectively and wisely because I think with…everything being cancelled or closed or shut down, everyone having to stay at home, I've basically went from a job KCOU – the student radio organization I was in or am in I should say – but my point being going from being busy 15 hours a day to nothing basically. And so it kind of seemed like, all of a sudden I had all this time on my hands. And at first I was like, really poor at managing it and I would just kind of like, you know, sleep all the time or you just kind of do the same old thing and not really do something with my day. But as time has progressed I've slowly been able to get on top of that a little bit. And, you know, try and do something productive and go for walks or do something that is a little more valuable to me.
