Democratic challenger Justin Aldred upset incumbent Republican Fred Parry in the race for Southern Boone County Commissioner Tuesday night.

A former staffer in the state auditor’s office, Aldred said he was surprised by the outcome. “Well, we are still in shock here, honestly.

It has not really set in, yet,” Aldred said. Aldred said he has two main messages for the people of Boone County. “I hope to foster and become part of a Boone County government that is open, honest, transparent, and listens to the voices of its community,” Aldred said. “This was not just me up there alone; this was the culmination of hundreds of hours of work from a wonderful team.”

Parry has served on the county commission since his election in 2016 as the county’s lone Republican official.

In the Northern District, Democrat Janet Thompson defeated Tristan Asbury.

Thompson has served as the Northern District commissioner since 2013. Thompson said she’s thankful for the voters’ trust. “It was very gratifying to know that they’ve believed that I have served them well the last eight years and were willing to give me another four years to complete some of the work that we have begun,” Thompson said.
