Columbia’s second ward has a new council member. Andrea Waner won the Ward 2 seat in the Tuesday, April 6 election.

With 52.2% of the vote, Waner defeated Jim Meyer and Bill Weitkemper.

Meyer and Weitkemper received 38.2% and 9.5% of the vote respectively.

Waner said running the campaign took a lot of time and effort, but many in the community want to see women and mothers succeed.

“I’m grateful that I get to be the first woman in over 30 years to represent the second ward on the city council,” said Waner.

Waner said that "Columbia is not truly built for families," and hopes as a council member to make Columbia the "best place to live, learn, work and play."
