Missouri employers would be barred from identifying workers by the last four digits of their Social Security numbers under a bill in the state Senate.
Missouri law already prohibits an employer from using a worker's entire Social Security number for ID purposes.
Republican Senator Luann Ridgeway, of Smithville, says even using the last four digits could put employees at risk for identity theft if company records were stolen or compromised. That's because those digits are often used as identification for other things, such as a person's financial records.
Ridgeway's measure has been endorsed by the full Senate. It needs a second vote in that chamber before it goes to the House.
