Residents of Columbia’s Westwood Avenue neighborhood are split on the City’s decision to remove troublesome trees in the area.

At a meeting Thursday night, city arborist Chad Herwald told residents eight trees needed to be removed because of extreme damage to sidewalks in the area.

Westwood resident Frances Dickey says no one in the neighborhood knew the trees were being removed until orange Xs appeared. She says other alternatives need to be discussed before the trees are cut down.  Another resident, Hank Ottinger, said otherwise.

“That section of Westwood we’re talking about really needs significant sidewalk repair and curbs,” said Ottinger.

Residents suggested building sidewalks around the trees among other ideas. Herwald says the city will look into those suggestions, but for now, the designated plan of removing the trees will continue as planned.
