Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon says increased state general revenues make some proposed budget cuts unnecessary, specifically those for foster children and people with mental illnesses.
In a letter sent to state lawmakers Friday afternoon, Governor Jay Nixon called 130 million dollars in proposed cuts to welfare programs draconian.
Nixon says an 80 million dollar increase in revenue from this year means lawmakers don't have to follow through on the proposed cuts included in the Senate's budget. The cuts are aimed at programs for seniors, people with disabilities and foster children.
The letter comes as House and Senate negotiators are set to reconcile differences between each chamber's 26 billion dollar budget over the next few days.
