17 Acre Annexation Agreement Approved by One Vote Margin

The Columbia City Council meeting began with a somber introduction by Mayor Brian Treece as he proposed a moment of silence to remember Darwin Hindman, the former mayor of Columbia, who died early Monday morning.

Hindman, 86, was the longest-serving mayor in Columbia, spending 15 years in the position from 1995 to 2010.

An annexation agreement requested by Fred Overton Development Inc. passed by a margin of one after some debate among community and council members. The agreement allows for the city to extend a sewer connection to 17 acres of land on Gillespie Bridge Road, north of Coats Lane.

Project manager Tim Crockett said connecting to the existing line in Columbia is the most “environmentally-friendly” option. Crockett also said the project would be funded by Boone County and that the city’s only hand in the project would be to provide connection for the sewer to the Boone County location.
