Columbia will be Bird-free for a while.

After a yearlong contract, Bird’s agreement to operate scooters in the city expired Monday. The company has until the end of the day Friday to remove their scooters, said Brian Adkisson, a spokesperson for the city.

In a statement, a Bird spokesperson said the company is “thrilled that residents and students quickly embraced our option as a way to get around town.”

“While the city’s pilot is soon coming to an end, we look forward to working collaboratively with the city and the university to develop a more permanent mobility option that continues to offer a sustainable transportation solution for entire community,” the statement said.

The city has plans to implement a new pilot program for scooters beginning Jan. 1. Bird and other scooter companies will be eligible to bid to be included in that program.
