Board of Education approves Kansas City charter school

Oct 28, 2015

The state Board of Education has authorized a group to move ahead with plans to open new charter schools in Kansas City.

The board on Tuesday authorized Los Angeles-based Citizens of the World to move forward with plans for the schools.

The group has three schools in Los Angeles and two in Brooklyn. The Kansas City plan calls for opening two kindergarten through first-grade elementary schools in 2016, adding a grade each subsequent year.

The Kansas City Star reports the charter expects to start with about 300 students and reach about 1,800 students after expanding to all 13 grades in 12 years. The charter group expects to operate four schools eventually.

The charter school leaders say immediate priorities include finding facilities and engaging families and local leaders.
