Columbia City Council has approved $2.25 million for land designated for a municipal service center that could house a salt storage building, new fire station, water tower, electrical storage yard and potentially a recycling center.

The 9.6 acre plot, purchased from Beacon Street Properties LLC, is located at the southwest corner of Scott Boulevard and Route KK.

Columbia Fire Chief Randy White said the area is in much need of a new fire at the city council meeting.

“In that location we’ve got pretty good access in all directions and so it will give us really good coverage in the southwest which is an area we’ve identified as an area of concern for quite a while,” White said. “So that particular place is well suited for us to put a new station.”

The new fire station would include housing for firefighters and they would dispatch directly from the station. White said the station could be up and running within 60 to 90 days after closing on the property.

The water tower would be funded through the water bond and the electrical storage yard, and the recycling center would be enterprise funded from those utilities.
