Memorial services for former Columbia Mayor Darwin Hindman were held over the weekend. Some Columbia residents chose to honor the mayor, who was an avid cyclist, in a unique way.

Dozens of cyclists gathered at the Darwin and Axie Hindman Discovery Garden at Stephen’s Lake Park Saturday morning for a memorial ride to Hindman’s services at Calvary Episcopal Church.

The cyclists left shortly after noon, riding west on Walnut before turning down Ninth and passing in front of the church, where they were greeted by Hindman’s family members.

The PedNet Coalition, with which Hindman worked extensively during his life, organized the ride.

PedNet CEO Annette Triplett said she wasn’t surprised by the large turnout. "We threw this together in the last couple of days but so many people knew Darwin in the area, and so many people love being able to walk and bike in the area and a lot of that is because of the work that Darwin did," Triplett said.

Cyclists at the event praised Hindman’s work on trails in the area, including the MKT and the Katy Trails, as well as his efforts to make the city more cyclist-friendly.

Hindman, who served as mayor from 1995 through 2010, died last week at the age of 86.
