Dr. H. Brian Yearwood has been picked as the next Superintendent for the Columbia Public Schools, the district announced in a statement today.

Yearwood was selected by the board this morning in a private executive session, according to the statement. His official start date is July 1, 2021.

The statement said Yearwood has been involved in education for over 30 years. He currently works in Manor, Texas, as chief operations officer for Manor Independent School District.

A nationwide search had been in effect after CPS Superintendent Peter Stiepleman announced his retirement earlier in the school year.

Board of Education President Helen Wade said in the statement that Yearwood has substantial experience in education and other areas the board has been searching for, including literacy and college and career readiness.

"We are excited about his energy and optimism and believe he will give CPS 110%," Wade said.

Yearwood said in the statement he plans to visit and get to know the district, through a variety of meetings, before his position as the superintendent officially starts.

"I believe that these meetings will help foster quality relationships, which I value and appreciate,” Yearwood said.
