About 50 people attended a rally Thursday evening at MU’s Traditions Plaza to support raising the minimum wage for university employees to $15 an hour.

“What’s outrageous? Poverty wages!” protestors cheered over the beat of a drum.

Endorsed by union Laborers Local 773, the Coalition of Graduate Workers and Missouri Jobs with Justice, the rally focused on the $15 for Mizzou campaign, which would directly raise the wages of university maintenance staff, hospital workers and other MU employees, according to a Missouri Jobs with Justice news release. Missouri Jobs with Justice works with state, community, labor, student and faith-based groups to advocate for economic, racial and social justice in Missouri, according to the release.

MU professor Stephen Graves, founder of St. Francis Catholic Workers Steve Jacobs and undergraduate and graduate MU students made short speeches at the rally.

“The university has a billion dollar endowment, yet employees have to get food stamps and go to food pantries,” Jacobs said.
