Community leaders want a judge to appoint an oversight board for St. Louis jails following the second major inmate uprising this year.
The group on Tuesday sent a petition to the St. Louis Circuit Court presiding judge asking him to create a permanent, independent board to ensure inmates are treated humanely.
Detainees at the City Justice Center broke windows, set a fire and threw chairs and other items out of a third-floor window Sunday.
More than 100 detainees were involved in a revolt at the jail in February. Inmates have voiced concerns about conditions at the jail and the coronavirus pandemic.
