Jill Biden Visits Columbia In Advance Of The Democratic Primary

DC Benincasa

Joe Biden’s campaign is making a last-ditch effort to reach Missouri voters.

Former Second Lady Jill Biden visited Columbia’s Activity & Recreation Center Monday. She highlighted her husband’s ability to bring Americans together and his role in passing the Affordable Care Act.

Some Biden supporters say his care for people is a motive for their support. The It’s On Us campaign is a campus sexual assault prevention program founded by the Obama-Biden White House.

Biden volunteer Tori Schafer founded an It’s On Us chapter at MU after being a sexual assault victim. She was even invited to the White House for her work, and she received a Biden Courage Award in 2018. Schafer said her first interaction with Biden showed his care for the issue.

“He gave me a pep talk and he was like, ‘Tell me what’s going on in Mizzou and what the White House can do for you,’ which is a very surreal experience from a girl in the middle of nowhere Missouri,” she said.

Volunteer Ted Farnen said his experience, electability and empathy make him his choice for the nominee.

“He’s a good, decent guy, who I think is sincere about solving people’s problems, and I think people relate to that,” he said. “And that’s why I think he will place so well not just with democrats, but with independents and even some disaffected republicans.”

Mr. Biden also visited Kansas City and St. Louis Saturday. Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders visited St. Louis Monday morning.

Michigan, Mississippi, Idaho, North Dakota and Washington are also holding primaries today.
