Judge Suspends Evictions In Jackson County For 2 Weeks

A judge has suspended evictions in Jackson County for the next two weeks.

Circuit Judge J. Dale Youngs said Monday he was halting evictions until Jan. 24 because the coronavirus pandemic and recent social unrest could endanger the lives of county employees who deal with evictions. The order comes after two Jackson County court deputies shot and injured a man last week during an eviction in Blue Springs. Police said the man aimed at gun at workers serving an eviction notice.

KC Tenants, a tenants’ rights organization, has repeatedly urged court and government officials to halt evictions to help tenants hurt by the virus and economic downturn.
